Formation of Earth for grade V

Before introducing the chapter “Earth” I used these questions to know children’s prior background knowledge on the topic. Most of them had some idea about the earth.

Questions

Responses

Where do we live?

We live in Monggar.

Where is Monggar located?

It is located in Bhutan.

Where is Bhutan located?

It is located on the earth.

Have you all seen Earth?

Yes, we have seen the picture of Earth in the book and on the television.

What is the shape of the Earth?

It looks like a ball.

Secondly, I initiated the class to discuss what they wanted to learn about the earth after showing the picture on the projector. Made the children share using K-W-L Chart. I was excited to know their curiosity on the topic as the list of “What I want to learn ……………” kept on increasing.

Thirdly, I took the children to the ICT lab and made them sit in pairs. I provided the link: https://youtu.be/fJ0J4mbj0-o. Instructed them to type the link in Google, click, and explore (The link is an animation explaining the formation of the Earth).

In the beginning, the children faced difficulty in opening the link. Gradually they could do with the support.

Children were mesmerized by the animation.

·         Glimpse of children watching the animation on   You Tube

The animation video was stopped at certain times and probed children’s understanding with questions.

Questions

Children’s responses

What is the name of the planet?

 Earth.

What is the actual name for the giant mass of water and a giant mass of land on the Earth?

The giant mass of water means the oceans.

The giant mass of land means the continent.

How does the earth support us in surviving?

They provide us food to eat, water to drink and air to breathe.

How did the Earth form?

4.5 million years ago everything started to spin. It pulled the dirty gas cloud forming a big disk. Then the small particles of rock, gas, and dust started to stick together creating larger objects until it became a sphere that turned into planet earth.

Instantly after the completion of the video clip instructed the children to fill in the last column (WhatI learned …..)

                                                              Children’s sample work

In groups, they discussed after watching the animation. The children actively participated. The discussion was very interactive. Children were satisfied with the animation video as they were able to understand the earth in detail. Collaboratively filled up the K-W-L chart and displayed it in the classroom for reference.

This ICT integration helped me to explain the topic and achieve all the objectives of my lesson.
