Topic: Picture Description          Subject: English             Class: One

Firstly. I used PPT slides to revise the words.  The words particularly would benefit the children in describing the pictures. I saw children eagerly gazing at the slides when each word floated on the projector. It was the first time children were been taught with PPT slides. I saw children’s excitement through their expressions.

Secondly, I projected a picture and prompted questions to make the children predict. Subsequently, I made the children describe the picture with three sentences in their notebooks.  The sharing of their description was done through popcorn strategy.

Thirdly, I instructed the children to imagine a scene they would do if they were present in the picture.  Honestly, I had to reiterate the question in Dzongkha. It consumed time for them to create their scene.

Finally, I instructed them to draw their scene. The drawing of a scene exhibited how creative the children can be. All of them were excited to share the picture with me.

Since the description on the first picture wasn't as per my expectation, I projected another picture and provided the same instructions. The second activity took less time to complete and, the children performed explicitly well.

Topic: Child Abuse                            Chapter 9: People and the Society                   Class Five

Child abuse is defined as the ill-treatment of a child by parents, caregivers, and others. Some forms of child abuse are hurting the child’s feelings, hitting, threatening, touching body parts, or forcing the child for sexual activities.

I started the lesson with their prior knowledge on the term “good” and “bad”. Many were able to share the emotions they feel when they look at these words. It indicated to me that the children had ideas related to these terms.

I flashed out the clip suggested in the NNC Instructional Guide of Class V Social Studies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx9ON15inv0) and made the children watch.

Initially, I could sense children feeling uncomfortable watching the clip together, and gradually they accepted the fact and got ease.

After the clip, they listed two good touches and bad touches.

.                                                                     Sample Work

Finally, we discussed how touches are good or bad. I am extremely satisfied as the children were able to take away the core message from the clip.

Class I English                           Topic: Listening Activity                         Date: 29th September

Today I have conducted a listening activity for class one. Firstly, I provided the instructions. Secondly, I played the audio of the story “Mask” without the video. The clip is a famous animation that is loved and enjoyed by children of all ages. I purposely chose this audio as it has a rich vocabulary. The language spoken is appropriate for our Bhutanese classroom. It is a story of Peppa Pig learning to make a face mask.

Initially, I observed children not listening attentively. As soon as they heard Peppa’s voice, they became very attentive. I was surprised to see t children recognizing the pig’s voice even though there was no visual which specifically indicates that they have been watching Peppa Pig’s show

Finally, I made the children show their understanding of the story through drawings. Their drawings made me realize how little they comprehended the story as many of them could only draw one pig and a mask. Henceforth, I should use both visuals with audio for lower primary for better comprehension.

Demonstrative Pronouns to Grade One

Class One                                      Subject: English                              Date: 1st September

Topic: Demonstrative Pronoun

I taught Demonstrative Pronouns (This, That, These, and Those ) and the usage to class one children on 1st September. Owing to the National lock down the children didn’t get the opportunity to learn these in class PP last year. It has made the children confused in using the words. As a means to make them confident in these words, I planned and taught them. I have integrated my lesson with a video prepared by VTOB to enhance my lesson and make their learning joyful.

Firstly, I introduced these words with the help of classroom objects. I asked them the questions such as:

1. What is this? ( by holding a pencil)

2. What is that? ( by pointing to a pencil that is farther away)

3. What are these? (by holding eight pencils)

4. What are those? (by pointing at eight pencils that are farther away)

Modeled the answer as I could see many children struggling to respond correctly. Children were made to repeat loudly by saying:

1. This is a pencil.

2. That is a pencil.

3. These are pencils.

4. Those are pencils.

Secondly, I showed a video clip on “Demonstrative Pronoun” prepared by voluntary teachers which were aired through BBS last year. (https://youtu.be/yEmNYRnzs4Y)

I prompted the children to watch the video by pointing to the words when the teacher was teaching the concept. Children actively interacted with the video as they loved and enjoyed watching a Bhutanese teacher teaching the same lesson.

I am satisfied with the lesson as I could see and feel their positive interaction with the activity.

Formation of Earth for grade V

Before introducing the chapter “Earth” I used these questions to know children’s prior background knowledge on the topic. Most of them had some idea about the earth.

Questions

Responses

Where do we live?

We live in Monggar.

Where is Monggar located?

It is located in Bhutan.

Where is Bhutan located?

It is located on the earth.

Have you all seen Earth?

Yes, we have seen the picture of Earth in the book and on the television.

What is the shape of the Earth?

It looks like a ball.

Secondly, I initiated the class to discuss what they wanted to learn about the earth after showing the picture on the projector. Made the children share using K-W-L Chart. I was excited to know their curiosity on the topic as the list of “What I want to learn ……………” kept on increasing.

K-W-L Chart

Topic: Earth

What I know

What I want to know

What I learned

Thirdly, I took the children to the ICT lab and made them sit in pairs. I provided the link: https://youtu.be/fJ0J4mbj0-o. Instructed them to type the link in Google, click, and explore (The link is an animation explaining the formation of the Earth).

In the beginning, the children faced difficulty in opening the link. Gradually they could do with the support.

Children were mesmerized by the animation.

·         Glimpse of children watching the animation on   You Tube

The animation video was stopped at certain times and probed children’s understanding with questions.

Questions

Children’s responses

What is the name of the planet?

 Earth.

What is the actual name for the giant mass of water and a giant mass of land on the Earth?

The giant mass of water means the oceans.

The giant mass of land means the continent.

How does the earth support us in surviving?

They provide us food to eat, water to drink and air to breathe.

How did the Earth form?

4.5 million years ago everything started to spin. It pulled the dirty gas cloud forming a big disk. Then the small particles of rock, gas, and dust started to stick together creating larger objects until it became a sphere that turned into planet earth.

Instantly after the completion of the video clip instructed the children to fill in the last column (WhatI learned …..)

                                                              Children’s sample work

In groups, they discussed after watching the animation. The children actively participated. The discussion was very interactive. Children were satisfied with the animation video as they were able to understand the earth in detail. Collaboratively filled up the K-W-L chart and displayed it in the classroom for reference.

This ICT integration helped me to explain the topic and achieve all the objectives of my lesson.
